Nick Bostrom in 2003 published the Reality Simulation Theory, a paper where the following was proposed:
This paper argues that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a
“posthuman” stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. It follows that the belief that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor‐simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation. A number of other consequences of this result are also discussed.
One of those consequences is "Base Reality".
According to Misha Thomas from the University of Geneva:
“Base reality” is existence itself. The significance of this principle is to establish existence as foundational to all epistemology. In other words, existence is something that is presumed, presupposed and taken as axiomatic to all reasoning.
If we hold existence as base reality, there is no need to ask questions about existence like, “where did existence come from, how did it start, etc.?” Existence just is.
Now, particular “things” in existence can be scrutinized and examined, but existence as existence can’t. It just is. It is the basis of reality and the process and variables involved in thinking about it.
The speculation about whether or not our experience in life is a simulation does not in anyway change the basic principle here that existence — as the widest phenomenon at play here — is still the base of this process of examination.
Do you believe this is base reality?
