One of my favorite things to do in video games has been sneaking my way through outposts, eliminating adversaries one by one, since Far Cry 3. I'm delighted to report that meticulously eliminating violent thugs in rural America is just as much fun as it is in the Himalayas, and that Far Cry 5 is yet another fantastic installment in Ubisoft's open-world franchise. It may be playing a familiar tune, but all of these combat, physics, and wildlife components combine to create unexpectedly furious and humorous action situations.
This time, you take on the role of a sheriff's officer, part of a task group dispatched to Montana's fictional Hope County. Rural America may not be as exotic or interesting as a tropical island or a remote mountain, but it is a vast open world where things are continuously blowing up, wild creatures are pouncing, and cultists are lining up to be your target practice. Hope County's mountains, valleys, plains, woods, rivers, lakes, and caves ensure that there is never a dull moment.

Being Stranded And Pursued By Heavily Armed Militia Was A Thrilling Experience.

Far Cry 5 is a nice-looking game with all of that landscape and action, but it isn't on the same level as, say, Horizon: Zero Dawn. Even when compared to another recent open-world Ubisoft game, it pales in comparison to Assassin's Creed Origins. It's mostly adequate, but the pop-in generated by the landscape's density occasionally distracted me. It's difficult not to notice all the magically appearing trees as you meander around the forest, even on the PS4 Pro. In truth, there isn't much of a difference between the PS4 and the Pro other from the quality on a 4K TV.

The number of distinct cultist goon faces can likewise be counted on one hand, so anticipate to be shooting the same faces again and over. Long load times – upwards of 60 seconds – on both PS4 and PS4 Pro, a handful of glitched missions I had to retake, and the one occasion Far Cry 5 entirely froze on me round out my technical issues.

Joseph Seed, a zealot leader who hasn't left the same effect on me as Vaas or Pagan Min did in the previous two Far Cry games, is in charge of this dark region of Montana. He doesn't say anything memorable, and his motivation for wanting to kill the planet is unclear. But the story ends up in an unforgettable place, making this an open-world adventure that is worth seeing through to completion.

I enjoy that you may choose between a male or female protagonist and do some mild customization for the first time in a Far Cry game. Unfortunately, it's a purely aesthetic choice, as your character will be mute in either case (with no bespoke voice acting) and most people will refer to you as "The Deputy." And, for a crazy series like Far Cry, the personalization options are a tad limited. More are unlocked as you go, so it's not as bad as it seems at first, but they're few and far between, and they're rarely more than a shirt and trousers. The only exception is a Far Cry Primal-style caveman/woman attire, which is amusing and something I'd like to see more of. But this being a first-person game, you won’t see much of yourself in the campaign anyway... unless you die a lot.

The Atmosphere Is Reminiscent Of An Action Film From The 1980s Set In A Conservative State.

While the majority of the original soundtrack is fairly conventional action movie fare, the menu music is a very beautiful bit of acoustic Americana that I would listen to even if I wasn't playing. The cult choir also sings a few original gospel songs that are both catchy and scary.
Is Far Cry 5 a very political game now? No, I don't believe so. There are a few things that may be used to make a point about rural America's relationship with guns and the Second Amendment, and I've come across one individual who is a caricature of a traditional Trump fan (he has a mission called Make Hope Great Again). However, the novel appears to make no sweeping statements about contemporary events or political views. The atmosphere is more akin to an action film from the 1980s set in a conservative state. This isn't a place where rural America is mocked or mocked. Rather of relying on stereotypes, the characters you meet are well-written, personable, and funny.

That plot takes place on an open-world landscape that, in classic Ubisoft fashion, is jam-packed with so much to discover and so much going on at any given time that it's easy to lose focus on the job at hand. That isn't a criticism; I enjoy games with a lot of open possibilities. One of the funniest events of my life occurred when I rescued a woman being kept captive by the cult and, as she was thanking me, a wolverine leaped on her face and mauled her to death. Hey, I gave it my all.

I Enjoy Games With A Lot Of Possibilities.

In order to uncover lucrative treasure stashes, some minor contextual problem solving is required to complement the battle. The commodities are locked away in a shed high up on stilts overlooking a lake in one of these sidequests, Long Shot Lockpick. After swimming to the other side of the lake, you'll locate a sniper platform just suitable for gazing through a back window in the shed at the lock that can be shot off, permitting you entrance. These basic challenges aren't The Witness, but they do provide for calm periods of thinking in the middle of the commotion.
While Far Cry's emergent gameplay formula is addicting, it does have a certain level of repetition.
The objectives you must complete, the weapons you have at your disposal, and the now-cliche supernatural dream sequences are all familiar from Far Cry 3 and 4, so there aren't many surprises in store. Far Cry 5 is still a pleasure to play, and the violent combat never gets old (thanks in part to the amusingly realistic ragdoll death animations), but it doesn't feel revolutionary since it doesn't do much to distinguish itself.

The primary quest follows a slightly different pattern in that you must first lure out and remove Joseph Seed's three lieutenants (his siblings). To reach them, you'll need to build up Resistance Points by liberating outposts, rescuing captives, and otherwise eliminating their vibe. As you watch that resistance meter progressively fill, it's a delightful progression system that offers you a consistent visual indicator of your success. It also offers a “video game-like” path through various bosses to the ultimate battle. Hope County is truly open, and you can make your way through the three different areas and bosses in any order you like. I Doubt Any Of These Leaders Will Be Remembered In The Same Way That Vaas From Far Cry 3.

The four cult leaders each have their own personalities and recruitment strategies, making them ideal villains. Faith Seed, the game's only female boss, is the most intriguing, as she uses a medication called Bliss to induce hallucinations in her victims, which result in some of Far Cry 5's most visually stunning scenes. By the end of his arc, Jacob Seed had also won me over. He's an ex-soldier who doesn't believe his leader communicates to God, but is willing to cull the herd and exterminate anyone he considers weak. But, while much of the writing is brilliant, the villains don't have any genuine quotable zingers, so I don't anticipate any of these leaders to be remembered in the same way that Far Cry 3's Vaas is still remembered today.

Another notable difference is that, while Far Cry has always been – and continues to be – primarily about playing as a one-man (or woman) army, you spend less time alone in this game than in prior titles. More NPC allies await you, all of whom are well-written and played. Hurk, a bazooka-wielding rural boy whose appearance is very obviously inspired by Kenny Powers, is one of the funniest video game characters I've seen in a long time. He first debuted in Far Cry 3 and 4, respectively, as a pre-order bonus character and DLC, but it's fantastic to see him in the main game this time.

My Favorite Companion Is A Bazooka-Toting Country Boy.

Then there's the Gun for Hire system, which provides for new combat possibilities as well as friendship. Nine different Specialists can be recruited, providing backup in the shape of air support, long-range sniper shots, or even animals that will hunt and harass your enemy on your behalf. For example, if you sufficiently disrupt an enemy region, its boss may dispatch planes to locate and destroy you, which might be inconvenient when trying to sneak into an outpost. When you enlist pilot Nick Rye to your side, he'll follow you about in his jet and automatically attack who you attack, as well as be able to command hostile planes to be shot down. It's quite useful.

I appreciate how the crafting system is still there, but it's been toned down a bit so you don't have to spend as much time gathering leaves and branches. Hunting is also being minimized because animal skins are no longer essential commodities for upgrading equipment. Instead, you gain Perk Points by completing challenges such as a particular number of assault rifle kills, flying a certain distance in your wingsuit, or skinning animals, and you may spend them on whatever you choose. I like how this system allows for more progression options and rewards you with points for simply playing as you normally would.
In terms of the wingsuit, I only used it a few times because there are so many other ways to get airborne now. Planes and helicopters abound throughout Hope County, unlike in Far Cry 3 and 4. It's good to order a helicopter and fly to your destination via the scenic path. That extra firepower can also be useful after you arrive.

Far Cry 5 may also be played jointly with a real-life friend, which takes the game to a whole new level of craziness. Two players create twice the devastation, and it's a lot of fun to gallivant through Montana with a friend, wreaking havoc. It's a bummer that only the host player gets credit for missions completed. The guest will have to finish them again on their own (or go through again as host).

When There Are Two Players, The Chaos Is Multiplied By Two.

Far Cry Arcade, an entirely new mode separate from the story where you may design your own levels, adds to the replayability of Far Cry 5. It tries to keep you playing long after you've cleaned off the Hope County map, but it's a bit of a letdown if you're seeking to play rather than create in its current condition. The editing tools are extensive, and a variety of mission kinds may be made, but this isn't something you can sit down and make up on the spur of the moment. It will take time, dedication, and true level design abilities to create something worth playing.
As a result, much of what is available to play in Far Cry Arcade right now is dull and inane. There's a level named Resident Evil 7 that recreates the mansion from the horror game, but it's just walking around the outside. Another is Ragdolltest, in which you must defeat 216 slowly producing foes on a barebones battlefield - oh, and you're invincible, so there's no difficulty.

At launch, there are a few interesting levels available, the most of which were produced by Ubisoft's own developers. For example, there's a level about breaking out of jail with no health regeneration. I see the potential for a regular stream of new Far Cry material here, but it'll need dedicated and capable artists to bring it to life.
Other Ubisoft titles such as Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed Unity, and Far Cry Primal include assets in the Arcade. However, the materials offered are unlikely to be what you were hoping for, and the majority are unrecognizable. Branches, bone piles, and a bloodied rock, for example, can all be added to Primal. There were no woolly mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers, or cave people to be found. That appears to be a squandered opportunity to let us go completely insane.

Verdict
Far Cry 5 is yet another wide-open playground with all the ingredients for a true ruckus: a plethora of foes and allies, erratic fauna, and plenty of explosions. Despite the craziness, it manages to present a meaningful story with decent characters and a compelling conclusion, albeit not the most memorable in the series. I'm interested to see where the Far Cry formula goes next after its successful transition from exotic locales to America's backyard.
