Lately i have had a closer looks at politics. Especially because of the european elections last month. However my focus there were not the german politicians but the ones in the UK. To be more precise Tommy Robinson. It is fascinating how a guy that gets suppressed by the media and state still has the power and will to stand up for his beliefs and his country. While I may have different opinions than him I think it is crucial for a healthy society that he is heared. That he is given a platform where he can freely express himself and talk about his views and opinions.
What makes me sad is the fact that instead of having a dialogue with him to discuss the points he make the UK media continuously just portrait him as the "ultimate evil lying enemy of the state". I see it like this. If he really is wrong with everything he says it should be easy for his opponents to proof that. Instead he is kicked of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube & Co. This is not the way to deal with someone who criticizes the system and establishment. All they gain from this is bringing more people up against them. Over time this will create an environment of fear where nobody dares to speak out loud what they think.
Everyone must be heard. Everyone will be heard. If they speak bullshit. It is fine. It is their right. If their speech is offensive to you that is your problem. As long as they do not break any law anyone shall be free to express his opinion.
In Germany we have it in the constitution.
§5 Abs. 1: Jeder hat das Recht, seine Meinung in Wort, Schrift und Bild frei zu äußern und zu verbreiten und sich aus allgemein zugänglichen Quellen ungehindert zu unterrichten...
Everyone has the right to freely express and disseminate their opinions in speech, writing and pictures, and to be free to teach from generally accessible sources
However even in though it is in our constitution I do honestly not think that you can make use of this right. Lately the right nationalist party AfD (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany) gained popularity.
What they want? TL;DR: Germany for the Germans. End of the multiculture, closed borders and that Germany leaves the EU.
Do I think that's the right thing to do? No. Do I think it is okay to insult them just because they have different beliefs and opinions? Absolutely not.
I understand that Germany has a quite spicy history with right parties. But this is not a reason to treat parties like the AfD like shit.
If our democracy can not stand against this what is it worth? Think about it. If we are not able to argue against it without insulting them are we even better than what most of us see in them? I do honestly not think so.
We should rather start a dialogue with people that have different beliefs and opinions to understand them and to negotiate a solution that satisfies everyone instead of portraying them as the ultimate evil in our society.
The biggest threat in my opinion are not right political parties but the ignorance we treat them with.
Stop telling people to shut up because you don't agree with their opinions. You also want to freely express your beliefs and thoughts. It does not matter if you like what they say or if you agree.
I am concerned that if this mindset will not change we will see civil wars in europe. Sooner or later.
This is why I fully stand behind 3Speak. It gives everyone a voice. No matter if you are far right, far left or something in between. 3Speak does not censor you for your beliefs or thoughts but instead do the only thing that is correct: Let you speak.
