Critique of The infinite, fantasy and horror movie

4년 전

Critique of The Infinite (The Endless), the fantasy film directed and starring Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (responsible for Resolution). Already in theaters.

If you like the sci-fi cinema and you're hunting for sleeper summery shift, it's more than likely that The infinity (The Endless) be just what you are looking for. Its directors (and protagonists, by the way), Aaron Moorhead Y Justin Benson , they left us thinking with Resolution , a previous film with which it communicates. Do not be afraid not to have seen it, it is not necessary at all to understand what they are proposing now, although if you enjoyed it within the framework of a festival, it will generate greater complicity with your approach.

Infinity It is one of those films that are forged on a slow fire keeping the viewer on the edge of the chair with some particularly disturbing sequences. The key, lovecraftiana, is given to us in the quote that precedes the images in which they warn us with what they are going to play: "The oldest and most intense emotion of humanity is fear, and the oldest and most intense of the fears is the fear of the unknown "

So what generates us strangeness is precisely everything that can not be explained, that there are many things from the first moment, but that in the end they find a certain degree of explanation. Nothing is trivial in the staging, hence the recurrent forms of the circle are often repeated as well as all those mysteries in which we prefer not to abound so as not to spoil any key moment but in which the breaking of the temporal logic is fundamental and spatial.

Yes you have to clarify before continuing to deepen this criticism of Infinity that it is necessary to make many concessions to fiction: it will interest those who enjoyed series such as The OA or of movies like Another land, Coherence o First, but those who expect a very closed or spectacular story can easily feel cheated.

  • Justin and Aaron retain their names in fiction, lending them to their characters: they are two men who in their adolescence left a sect that awaited the Ascension and now survive trying to get ahead with precarious jobs.

One day, they receive a video from one of the followers of the cult. In it, he says that he is going to make a trip, but that he will return to the camp and that he simply wants to send a message of tranquility to his family and loved ones. Aaron, the younger brother, soon discovers that despite continuing to go to "deprogramming" dates to overcome his past, he wants to visit the sect, perhaps to reaffirm Justin's decision for him or why he does not finish finding his place.

Thus, embark on a disconcerting journey to the place where the cult survives by worshiping a kind of forest deity and in which their leader Hal (Tate Ellington) tries to persuade them to investigate the meaning of their lives.

There are several focuses of plot interest in Infinity , but the most powerful is the one that makes the viewer feel a huge and constant curiosity. In the first place, to know what this commune consists of and what effect it had on the two brothers in their youth, but very soon also for the succession of unexplained phenomena that surround them and that lead them to contemplate impossible landscapes and to meet people who seem live in your own world.

The performances are very solid, but also the staging is tremendously original: very realistic but at the same time with a photo with a dreamlike touch that does much good storytelling. We are discovering the new information with the characters themselves, so it is easy to empathize with them and understand their search for a way out.

Without having a fast pace or a sidereal budget, the creators demonstrate having a sharp wit and competent plastic solutions to catch us in their speech. And to let you fall like this, in your hands, for almost two hours without looking at the clock at any time, is a pleasure. Temporary paradoxes , paranormal questions, sketched questions and the eternal dichotomy between faith and reason come together in Infinity . And after watching it, the truth is that it makes you want to order more movies like this one ...

The infinite is the proof that it is possible to make fantastic films with few resources and a lot of imagination. His goal of unsettling the viewer and creating a disconcerting setting, reaches him within minutes of starting.

Those who seek answers to all their questions will be disappointed: it is not a film with a final closure.
