Now here is a tree you don't see around Africa very often, as a matter of fact, I have only ever met one other person that collected plants and had one of these amazing trees in his collection.
Brazilian grape-tree or Jaboticaba
Not only is this a beautifully fascinating to behold, it also produces lovely grape-like fruits on the stem of the plant, that I have used once before to make the most delectable jam from.
One thing that intrigues me about this tree is the way that it flowers and fruits directly from the stem. From a distance it looks like the tree is simply overridden with moss or fungi, it is only when you take a closer look that you realize that it is in actual fact the trees flowers.
While taking this photo, I got lost in the beautiful aroma and ambient feel of this trees aesthetic beauty and although you cant see it in the picture this tree was swarming with bees hard at work collecting some nectar for their hives. And I for one will certainly be returning to this tree harvesting just as eagerly once the fruits are ready...
Not only is the fruit from this tree a divine treat that can be eaten raw, or made into delightful jams and jellies, they have also been used folk medicine uses jaboticaba to treat asthma, throat inflammation, and gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disturbances
In the picture below, you can see the young fruit already starting to form on the bark of the tree:
