Gray Sunday Tragedy, Remembering the 2004 Aceh Tsunami

2개월 전

Today 15 years have passed, precisely on December 26, 2004, a tsunami wave hit Aceh. Starting from the earthquake several times, waves as high as approximately 20 meters made several cities in the province paralyzed.

The strength of the earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean at a depth of about 10 kilometers on the seabed. The earthquake source area is about 149 kilometers west of the city of Meulaboh, Aceh Province.

The earthquake which lasted for approximately 10 minutes was recorded to have a magnitude of around 9.0. After that the tsunami wave began to have an impact on the Aceh region and part of North Sumatra.
See the video below;

On the other hand, there are people who respond to the receding of sea water as a natural event that is out of the ordinary, their logic states that something will happen.
These people immediately migrated to leave the coast without the slightest thought that a mighty wave would hit land.

A few moments later, from a distance the tsunami waves were seen running up and rolling toward the beach at high speed.
No more time to stay away, let alone run. In that same instant there was a hysterical scream accompanied by the sentence Lailahaillallah, heard Allahuakbar.
The voices were silent forever. They are swallowed by large waves, oscillating, arising sinking, heading for land or being swept away by currents at high speed.

The mighty tsunami waves continued to spread to the mainland.
His voice rumbled against whatever was in front or that was blocking its speed.
Buildings that collapsed due to the previous earthquake, easily washed away towards coastal areas and lowlands.

Cars floated under the current, chipped asphalt, bridges and embankments were broken, electricity and communication facilities were cut off, houses were destroyed, and other buildings on the shores of the coast were in ruins.
The speed of the water is so terrible that many residents don't have the chance to save themselves.
The speed of a runner who runs an Olympic Games is far less fast than the speed of the tsunami waves that are so terrible.

In an instant, human bodies are crushed and rolled up together with the rubble.
People who are in the house, no longer have time to save themselves.
What's more there is still sleeping soundly on Sunday morning, because of holidays.

Only a few of them are lucky and can survive, it is also full of miracles and beyond human logic.
Those who escaped death migrated to find and occupy places that were thought to be safe from the waves.
With a roar, like a giant dragon hungry, the waves crushed and knocked down tree buildings, people's homes, then dragged him ashore as far as 7 km, then pulled into the sea with the same strength and speed up to 7 times.

Within 7 minutes, no less than three hundred thousand people who inhabited the coastal areas of Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, Aceh Jaya, West Aceh, Nagan Raya, Pidie, and North Aceh, floated into corpses.
It was truly unexpected that the wave emerged and hit the mainland of Aceh, they thought the world was doomed. Because of that, not a few people who resigned by only saying the sentence Lailahaillallah and Allahuakbar.

This major disaster was recorded as one of the deadliest natural disasters in the last century.
Countless lives have been lost in vain. Even today, the incident still haunts most of the people of Aceh, especially those who live on the beach.

Hopefully on the 15th anniversary of the Aceh tsunami disaster, we can all take lessons, so we are always alert and alert to disasters.
