Sacré-Cœur Basilica - Paris, France

2개월 전

As icons go, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris, France, finishes a solid second to the Eiffel Tower. Or, does it?? It's older. It's constructed at a higher elevation. And with much more cultural significance, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris might not be receiving its due.

It's also free to enter. Take that, Eiffel!

And such a fascinating history, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica has. Built as a reminder of France's 'moral decline,' it was conceived following France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

The Basilica sits atop Montmarte, the highest point in the city. Not unlike the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Cœur seems to be visible from almost anywhere in Paris.

Built from travertine stone, its bright white complexion radiates the sun and shines like a jewel at night under illumination.

A Roman-Catholic Church, its available for tours daily and features an incredible 360-degree view of Paris from atop its dome.

This last photo was taken during the Montmarte Wine Festival in October of this year. Seated on the broad, stone steps of the church, revelers enjoyed wine, food, and music under the autumn sunshine.

After you stop by the Eiffel Tower for a quick photo opportunity, be sure to head to Montmarte to see the real jewel of Paris: Sacré-Cœur Basilica.
