Pepino de mar! ./ Sea cucumber!

지난달

Dear community, today I share with you through these images the sea cucumbers that a friend caught and had them in the nursery of his boat and then made them in a bucket to take them to the shore, these are marine animals and invertebrates shaped like worms, related to sea urchins and stars, which are distributed in all latitudes, from warm waters in the tropics to cold waters near the poles; both in shallow and deep areas. They are organisms that feed by filtering their food from sediments (filter feeders); In other words, they separate the microorganisms from the material that makes up the bottom, thus oxygenate it by removing the sediment layers and return nutrients to the environment through their fecal matter.

Sea Cucumbers have been widely used as a food source, as they contain high protein content, in addition to being attributed aphrodisiac properties (Chen 2004, Bordbar et al., 2011). A growing demand and exorbitant prices (from $ 8 to $ 80 / Kg fresh and from $ 300 to $ 1,000 / Kg processed in 2017) have led to the worldwide decline of many of its populations; being overfishing one of the main problems that has contributed to its decline as a fishery resource.
