Hello folks, I am @jeffbradt, also known as JP Bradt, and today I give you...

Achievement #3: Content Etiquette

In an article entitled "What is Plagiarism," plagiarism.org states:

"The expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in some way (such as a book or a computer file)." Source

If one copies someone else's ideas without giving credit to the original author or neglects to put the quote within quotation marks, this is plagiarism. It is not the only type of plagiarism. Other types consist of:

  • turning in someone else's work as if it were one's own
  • failing to attribute credit to the original author while copying the style or English mechanics and altering the words of someone else's work
  • giving incorrect source information, such as a broken link
  • using mostly someone else's words for your work—In this case, it does not matter if one correctly cites the source, the person is still plagiarizing.
  • playing 'cover' songs (performing someone else's copyrighted music without their permission)
  • including someone else's video within one's own
  • pasting pictures from other websites on which the pictures are not open source
Once again according to plagiarism.org, the following are also plagiarism examples:
  • Re-creating a visual work in a different medium (for example: making a painting that closely resembles another person’s photograph).
  • Re-mixing or altering copyrighted images, video or audio, even if done so in an original way.

Plagiarism is often not taken seriously elsewhere on the internet, but here on Steemit, we actively seek and shut it down. I find this practice honorable, and it increases the appeal of Steemit for me. I am glad that we take seriously the infraction of plagiarism as I always abide by it and expect others to do the same.

There is actually a community member known as @endingplagiarism who is here for the specific purpose of preventing plagiarism on this platform. Members of Steemit can report instances of plagiarism in the Steemit community known as Mosquito Squishers.

I have read and understood the Etiquette on Steemit Community and will embrace Steemit etiquette.

Here is my Achievement #1.

Thanks to everyone who made this achievement possible.
Peace,
JP
