We have already commented more than once on this blog how scarce drinking water is on Earth and that three quarters of our planet is water, but of the 1,386 million cubic kilometers of water that is estimated to exist in our planet only 0.007% is water suitable for human consumption.

In addition to the decontamination of existing fresh water, one of the best options is undoubtedly the desalination of sea water, since it is the most abundant, and that is what a group of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are aiming for with their new desalination unit.

It is a new device to desalinate seawater that does not require any type of filters or pumps, weighs less than 10 kg, can work with the energy provided by a small portable solar panel that costs $50 and works with the push of a button , capable of generating drinking water at a rate of 0.3 liters per hour.

Se trata de un nuevo dispositivo para desalinizar el agua de mar que no requiere ningún tipo de filtros ni bombas, pesa menos de 10 kg, puede funcionar con la energía aportada por un pequeño panel solar portátil que cuesta $50 y funciona con solo presionar un botón, capaz de generar agua potable a razón de 0,3 litros por hora.



This innovative system uses electrical energy to remove particles from the water which avoids the need to replace filters, this reduces long-term maintenance requirements which is ideal for use in remote areas with very limited resources where it is much more acute lack of drinking water.

Este novedoso sistema utiliza energía eléctrica para eliminar partículas del agua lo que evita la necesidad de reemplazar los filtros, esto reduce los requisitos de mantenimiento a largo plazo lo que viene muy bien ideal para usarlo en zonas remotas y con recursos muy limitados donde es mucho más acuciante la falta de agua potable.

In the tests carried out, the researchers simply placed the box near the shore and threw the feeding tube into the water, in half an hour they filled a plastic cup with water that exceeded the quality required by the WHO.
Unfortunately it is still very expensive due to the materials it uses and there is still time to put it into production.

Changing filters time to time was headache as well as harmful. Thanks to new technology

Hello @mauromar, This invention is fascinating and very useful, but it can be said that it is expensive considering that it only produces 0.3 liters/hour, which is close to 7 liters per day (without taking into account that there is no sunlight 24 hours a day). However, it is a very good initiative that may be perfected in due time and will yield the expected results. I believe that it would have the best acceptance worldwide, no country is exempt from the global water crisis.
