Kentucky Owes Atheist $150k After Denying His “IM GOD” License Plate 😆

After telling an atheist he wasn’t allowed to have an “IM GOD” license plate, the state of
Kentucky will have to pay him more than $150,000 in attorneys’ fees and litigation costs. This case began in 2016, when the head of Kentucky’s Division of Motor Vehicles rejected Bennie Hart‘s request to get the personalized license plate even though he had it (without incident) in Ohio, where he had lived for the previous twelve years. That’s when he filed a lawsuit with the help of the ACLU of Kentucky and the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Last November, the case was all but settled. The same judge said that Kentucky officials “went too far” in rejecting Hart’s plate request and that “personalized license plates aren’t just for UK fans.” All that was left was deciding how much money the state owed Hart for his troubles.

Do people have the option to not have 'god' on their licence plates? In the UK we don't have any official slogans on them. You can request all sorts of things for personal plates, but they have to conform to certain formats and they will not allow at least sex and drug references. One of the best I have seen is an old one that was PEN15.

This guy is baiting the religious, but I'm okay with that. That dream of a secular US has been corrupted and caused all sorts of problems. Part of freedom of religion should be about not having one.

Based on some US legal cases I've heard of his costs are quite modest and people have claimed ridiculous damages.

Good for Mr Hart! I think that if the legal systems around the world worked like that, there would be less religious arrogance. Of course, we know that even in the states some legal decisions can be marred by religious biases, but rules like this one provide some hope that more objectivity can be had along the way.
If claiming to god is that sacrilegious, just let god settle the issue. That guys should not have survived his Ohio years, right?
The power of the word is quite overrated.
The guy's argument was very clever. It is in the very nature of American individualism and self-reliance to trust oneself. Many American ideals are founded on the basis of people's self relaince and self-determination. people, in a way, become their own gods by trusting their impulses, their talents and doing whatever must be done, usually against all odds, to get things done.
American innovation owes a lot to this aspect of its culture.
I applaud Mr Hart's determination to go all the way through this suit and I applaud the judge who ruled in his favor. It's a pity the compensation went mostly to lawyers.

Quite a clever person. He found a way to take advantage of the system and make money. Excluding word combinations and words related to negative phenomena in our lives, the rest should be allowed.

well in a sane country i expect the atheist to get justice that he deserves,he actually have the right to use whatever name he wants as his plate number...

@atheistrepublic for the fact that at the case started since 2016e sictem can b eears ago shows how slow our legal systems can be sometimes, but anyways i just pray that justice will prevail......better late than never...

though sincerely i am not comfortable with the "IM GOD" that he used as his plate number but he actually have right to choose whatever name he wants and he should never be penalized for that....
