Helping Little Dog Lucy to Walk again

Hello to all animal lovers and those who are willing to help little dogs ^ _ ^

Wow Yes, I had a time when I did not publish something not related to drawing, I am looking for more time to finish my digital drawings faster, and I always get annoyed when I have to do an activity that takes the time to do it, but I think in this occasion is the only time that it does not bother me, in fact, he is very excited about this project that made me resume my facet as a craftsman in micro carpentry, and this project was the elaboration of a support to help my sister's mascona to return to walk on its 4 legs.

This nice creature is called Lucy, she is the pet of my older sister Jenny, she is an extremely affectionate dog so much that she cries if you do not caress her, and when she sees you she is always wagging her little tail, my sister and her husband have 4 small dogs all of the Yorki breed and Lucy is the most spoiled, especially by my brother-in-law, since he always says that he owns Lucy and just as they say that pets are a reflection of their owners, Lucy began to be overweight like my brother-in-law, but at a level that little Lucy unfortunately cannot bear.

In a literal way Lucy is so chubby that she can not bear her own weight, to the point that she could no longer stand up, she could only sit and crawl, her hind legs could no longer use them, which is very sad news, she is a dog that is pure love and too young to be in a situation like that. My sister asked me for help with her, asking me if I could use my creativity and skills with wood to see if I could make a wheelchair or support for her, so that poor Lucy's back legs would not atrophy, that same day we looked for Online references to see how to help the little chubby hairy, in that my sister got several images of dogs with wheelchairs, or rather dogs with wheeled bibs, which were made of metal and plastic, notice how the structure was main and I was able to figure out how to replicate it in wood, and immediately we grabbed Lucy and did not measure her with a meter, to make her wheels as soon as possible ^ _ ^

Beginning Construction

P1120486.JPG

First of all, this thing had to be light, Lucy must be weighed down, not added, I looked in the scraps of wood from my little workshop and I got these slats (of unidentified wood) that I cut from a larger one and these also to have the ideal thickness, they practically do not weigh, so I could start cutting.

Having everything already cut, I had to sand everything, this structure could not have any sharp edges, much less chips (I nail like 3 sanding and polishing) and so I could begin to assemble, applying glue, screws and a lot of pressure.

I came up with a way of how to make the axle for the wheels which was simply with a small cut of a had to give the screw enough space for it to roll without wearing the wood.

Here it was ready, the only thing missing was the straps with which we would hold Lucy to the structure.

As soon as I finished it, I went to my Sister to test it with Lucy, she had been excited, but there was a problem when we put this thing on Lucy, it is that I had incorrectly measured the separation of Lucy's belly with the floor, or rather the real length of her legs, it turns out that Lucy is taller only that her big belly makes her look shorter, in addition to the fact that she is always sitting (she moves with her front legs) so I had to measure again and this time using the support structure for reference, and the difference was almost 8cm, so back to the workshop.

Another thing that I had been missing was to reinforce the straps, especially in the front part where a couple of straps were missing in the front, so that she would not remove this support when walking.

And with this she was finally ready to put it on Lucy, at first she didn't like it, but by the time she was able to move forward and quickly she was happy.

My sister also put Lucy on a diet and with these wheels, Lucy has been able to exercise, and in some moments she can walk without having to put the structure on wheels, at this rate she will soon no longer need them to walk and run, and You can do it like any other dog.

Here is a video of Lucy walking for the first Time with her new wheels ^ _ ^
