Anxiety Disorder - An Overview

Anxiety is considered as a normal human response to stressful situations. Examples of common anxiety disorders are generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder (anxiety), social anxiety disorder (conscientiousness), specific phobias or separation anxiety disorder among many others. You may even have several anxiety disorders. However, in some people, anxiety leads to more severe conditions such as phobias, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. In cases when anxiety becomes too much, it can lead to the development of a disease called panic disorder which is a very serious medical condition.

Anxiety is triggered by various kinds of traumatic events. These events usually occur during childhood years and play a major role in shaping your adult personality. Some examples of common traumatic events include natural calamities like earthquakes, terrorist attacks, death of loved ones, personal loss, and others. If you had constant exposure to traumatic events over your childhood years, you may experience extreme levels of anxiety.

Traumatic events can be considered as life events and the way we deal with them greatly influences how we feel. When we undergo extreme and prolonged distress after an undesirable life event, we may develop severe forms of anxiety. Anxiety disorders can be triggered by many people's negative reactions to these life events. It can also be a result of the way we perceive our own self and how other people perceive us.

There are different anxiety treatment options for this health condition. The treatment of a certain patient will depend on the severity of his symptoms and his prognosis. If you feel that you are experiencing anxiety, you should visit your doctor for proper diagnosis. Take note of the things that triggered your anxiety such as past incidents of violence, feeling trapped or threatened and worrying about money. Your doctor will help you understand your disorder better and recommend appropriate treatments.

Treatments for this mental health disorder usually include cognitive behavioral therapy, in which you will be given ways to control your anxiety and prevent it from affecting your daily life. Therapy will teach you how to recognize your symptoms and avoid doing things that trigger the symptoms. You will be taught how to relax, concentrate and take deep breaths. Your doctor may also recommend medication for you to control your fear.

In severe cases, medications may also be recommended by your doctor. The dosage will depend on the severity of your symptoms, your medical history and the severity of your anxiety. Anti-anxiety medicines can make you feel drowsy so you cannot work properly. Antidepressants can also affect your mood and eating habits. If you suffer from sweating due to excessive sweating, antidepressants can help control your sweating temporarily.

Physical symptoms of anxiety include excessive sweating, dizziness and difficulty in breathing. Physical illnesses are usually caused by infections, viral or bacterial diseases and substances that your body is not able to contain. Anxiety is usually a warning sign that something is wrong and that your body is fighting a war. You may have an extreme worry about health, life or death. People with anxiety disorders often become ill due to this stress and worry.

There are many different types of anxiety. The severity of your situation or environment will determine which type you have. For example, those who worry excessively about traffic, public speaking or food can be diagnosed as social phobia. Those who have excessive feelings of fear and worry in potentially stressful situations can be diagnosed as generalized phobia.

The most common types of anxiety are obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and specific phobias. The exact cause of each specific anxiety disorder is unknown but researchers are studying the various possible factors. Stress, traumatic events and chemical imbalance in the brain can cause a person to develop one specific anxiety disorder or the other. Someone who has Ocd has repeated, strong overwhelming feelings of fear or danger which he or she cannot control. Someone with PTSD has flashbacks or nightmares and constantly worries about being hurt or having a heart attack.

Specific phobias are a type of anxiety that causes physical symptoms such as blushing, shaking or nausea. They usually occur when you are faced with the object of your phobia. The symptoms of these mental health conditions do not go away even when you are no longer in the place where you fear. Specific phobias can go away by ignoring them or by seeking treatment for the fear of the object. In addition to the mental health conditions, anxiety may also be caused by a physical condition such as a broken bone, muscle tension or joint pain or a slight misalignment of the bones.

The risk factors for developing an anxiety disorder include having parents who suffered from it, living in high pressure situations, living in stressful situations, having negative life events, having negative social support and a history of abuse or neglect. Risk factors for general anxiety include living in a rural area, low socioeconomic status, low self-esteem and a history of depression. Symptoms include excessive worry and tension, insomnia, muscle tension, headaches, restlessness, irritability and restlessness. In addition to all the symptoms mentioned above, the more serious the situation that you are caught into, the higher your risk factors will be. When this is the case, it is better to seek immediate medical attention than to ignore the problem and hope that it will go away on its own.
