Top Of Mind Marketing On Steem

I read a book a few years ago called Top Of Mind by John Hall. <- Not an affiliate link...You should just buy his book, it's awesome!

It was one of those books that leaves an impression on you for years to come...I consider it a marketing classic and right up there with books like Purple Cow and Crush It.

One of the biggest take aways from it was this...People are bombarded with tens of thousands of marketing messages each day. And if we think our customers / readers will simply remember us, because we're nice people, we're in for a surprise.

We must put effort into being seen as often as we can...And that comes in the form (for me at least) in content creation.

As luck would have it...I discovered the Steem blockchain and it's been full speed ahead since.

The power of the blockchain, mixed with the potential of social media. Yeah the sky is the limit here...

However many new Steemians and members to get stuck thinking;

1. Their content must be of Pulitzer Prize winning quality.
2. You can write one post a month, and followers will flock to you.
3. If you don't get 50 upvotes, your content failed to do it's job

Here's a little self examination of my journey here on Steem.

  • I joined...December 17th, 2017.

So I've been on the blockchain for 663 days...

  • My journey on Steem has now allowed me to create, 650 pieces of content in those 663 days...(Technically, this is post 651 ;))

Not too bad huh?

Almost a post a day since I've been here. And I'm hardly what you would call a Pulitzer Prize winning author. My stuff is like Grade 5 level content...People can read it in a few minutes, hopefully get some value from it and continue on their day.

I'll never be one of the 'highly rewarded top of the food chain content creators' on Steem...And I'm not trying to be. I'm just trying to stay in front of people :)

However...If you take a look at my @Steemitboard stats from a few months ago, you'll notice a trend....

I track my 'rewards' on Steem every week or two...For the simple reason that I want to make sure I'm growing here on the blockchain. Both in upvote count and rewards per post.

A few months ago I was generating about 14 Steem as an average reward per post...I'm now up to 17.25. (View screen shot above...)

Why is that?

Has my content gotten better? Maybe, but I doubt it...

Has the hardfork increased my payouts? Not sure if @Steemitboard takes that into consideration, but if anything it's taken from my rewards...

Why do I have an increase in rewards then?

Ahhhhh snap!

Remember the 5-500-5000 game plan?

It was simple enough...Show up, everyday. Engage with people. Everyday. Create and curate. Everyday.

Become top of mind to your followers!

It didn't matter that I wasn't creating epic blog posts that English teachers around the world would marvel at...I just created. Everyday.

And I didn't really concern myself with trying to generate 10,000 followers. I was grateful and rewarded the 2346 that engaged with me everyday....

I just showed up everyday and did everything I could to deliver value to my readers and did my best to be in front of them daily.

Top of mind 'marketing' is something everyone in this field can excel at. Sure it takes effort, but if you develop a plan and stick to it...You will grow!

And that's all we really want...Growth. Because so many good things come from that....

just checked that 2yo post... I don't follow your first rule and that's the problem... Interact with 5 NEW peple every day... That's powerful and I gotta start doing that.
Thanks for another inspiring reminding post :)

it's amazing what it can do...changes so much for your experience on steem

When people finally understand that they need to have fun, express themselves, and be genuine in their own way they’ll have a much better steem experience.

I am keeping my blog as casual as possible. It’s

10000% agree on that. less stress, more fun lol

I just came back to Steem after the new hard fork to give it another shot. I think the increase in curation rewards was a good idea and I've managed to power up 500 SP.

I'm making it my goal to try and post as much as I can and I'm also trying to get involved in some of these sub communities such as PAL and SteemLEO. I've been stuck at 84 followers forever though. :P My first Steem account back in 2017 I managed to gain ~700. So, hopefully I'll get there soon. I have some ideas coming downstream here.

Thanks for the good read and motivation!

Welcome back :)

Yeah it's a lot tougher to get followers here than back in 2017....I got a good chunk of mine in the beginning of 2018 when everyone was flocking to Steem.

Yeah it was crazy back then. I remember making 50-100 bucks a post like nothing. Good times. Hopefully we can get back there some day soon!

Your posts are truly inspiring, Jon! ^_^ It's a wonderful reminder for me, esp. when I'm having a bad day or bad week... :))

Awesome to hear that and so glad you are enjoying them!

posts like this are very inspiring and make me want to keep going

Good to hear, been a month since your last post...Let's gooooooooo! ;)

thanks for the Steem Jon, and for the mention here.

you are right. the key is connecting with others every day, and to keep expanding your reach.

every now and then, someone will be inspired enough to take action. that is the winning formula for affiliate marketing. patience is the key, and your 5-500-5000 game plan looks like an awesome approach.

it works...nothing is guaranteed, but at the same time you can never go wrong engaging with people every day

Ease of writing comes from practice. And everyday is the best way to practice and most likely improve a skill.

And your post is really good for new people Jon. I also experienced growing numbers, but they all needed time and, as you said... showing up every day.

Yeah man....I am hardly a writer...But I write everyday...Go figure lol

Consistent action every day is really essential, it's how we build know, like and trust, and we can't create Mona Lisa every time we make a post or video, but we can still do the best we can to deliver the message we want to convey for the subject we are talking about.

And that usually does not require an 8000 word article, and if we do most people won't read it anyways, so a shorter post is often even better.

Thanks for a great post @jongolson, it made it's job well, delivering your message in an easy to read format and length, keep it up and stay awesome.

my article today was like 150 words if that....Short and sweet, but I thought the message packed a big punch...Hope so at least!

Yeay it was great, and with great advice, this one 620 words, todays 91 words.

This is a powerful idea.
Be present in people minds by being present everyday. Little and often.
Cheers for sharing, literally.

Yup and the best part for me...Is I dont try to be 'epic' everyday...I just try to be in front of people.

You have received a @buildawhale manual curation vote.

And you guys rock....Thank you so much!

Great post and advice as usual.

Totally agree @jongolson that consistency is a must key, without it, we just meld into the background like the microwaved food we forgot we put in there.
Society is so caught up in short term goals and games that only require attention spans of Gnats that we forget to realise that long term planning is quite out of place now.
The more we engage and the more we present ourselves the more we will be engaging and the more people will want to know what we are up to and what works for us.
Also don't plan to have 10000 followers, that will happen if you are engaging, but if you try too hard then you will only become disillusioned that you haven't reached that goal and most likely give up.
Love your work Jon and will always be a supporter
Thanks for the post

The right people will pay attention. And they will start engaging. that's my model at intriguing and create enough value that people can't ignore you.

Great stuff Jon, I am seeing more and more the power of the blockchain. I am a firm believer in the routine habits and I am working on using the blockchain more and more.

Absolutely man...And it's not going to 'take off' tomorrow...I feel like we're setting ourselves up for the next few years here.
