Sophie Gengembre Anderson ( 1823 - 1903 ) was a French-born British artist who specialised in genre painting of Victorian children and women . She studied portrait painting under Baron Charles von Steuben in Paris . Despite her excellent painting technique it was not easy for women at that time to have a successful artistic career .
She collaborated with her husband Walter Anderson on portraits of Protestant Episcopal bishops. 1854 they moved to England where Sophie Anderson gained fame as a painter exhibiting her artworks at the Royal Academy .

This is one of the best art posts I have seen on steemit so far. Upvoted, resteemed and shared to nearly 7000 people on twitter. Thanks for sharing!

Artworks like these make me sad about what passes for art (the colloquial meaning of art, anyways) nowadays. Yeah, I'll be honest, I think it's all either shock value or 2deep4u stuff, or both. Not exactly comparable to the the amount of skill it takes to create something rivaling an old master's painting.

Unfortunately I agree with you. However, there are still some good artists who paint beautiful, aesthetic pictures! They are the Light in the sad world of contemporary art .
