The Audience

          Such a stage
          So many plots
          First rising
          Then fading away
Now crashing over against one another
          In this mesmerizing inscrutable play

          The theatre Gods weep
          Applauding the earnest

          Those of us
          Who are
          To our fictions
          Who dress the part
          And project the gestures
          To the Upper Circle

          But not too much
          Hold back
          Don't spoil it
          With egotism
          Lest they become
          Jarred by affectation
And can no longer enter into
The re-enactment of our part's travails

          I know that you are
I know that you are out there
          Behind the bright lights
