Lately, I’ve been having a really hard time with what could be interpreted as crypto support for Trump within the libertarian movement.
These folks decry the lockdowns, and claim businesses would be better off without them at no public health expense. But this obviously forgoes the issue of norms; people simply just do not want to go out. It seems any relationship they attempt to uncover is spurious. While this does not directly defend Trump, it opens the door for bolder interpretations that find him in a nobler light.
Then you have this very recent election conundrum. People are saying, “yeah, well Democrats wanted to suspend elections!” Yeah, but not presidential ones. Low-stakes, municipal elections by and large. You can already see weeks later this becoming a major talking point of GOP cult members. It doesn’t help purported libertarians are making these claims.
Then the issue with masks, Jesus. The guy-who-hates-education and a few others have been calling masks anti-liberty but fail to understand the Coase theorem and externalities. For a group of people who supposedly get economics, some who used to be in our ranks couldn’t pass intermediate micro.
And look, maybe I’m being soft on the left here for the moment, but my God, libertarians are just embarrassing themselves left and right. I’m ashamed to be associated with these people after we already had to deal with some pretty gruesome discoveries over the last two years. Honestly, I’m not sure it’s worth salvaging.
