[pawrt-man-tooz-deyz]

noun

1: a day when you can mix two or more words to form a new word that means something completely different than its root words freely and without judgment.
2: a signal to let your creativity and wordplay flow.

For the better part of last year, I've been doing a semi-regular weekly post that centered around portmanteaus. Some of you have already noticed that the posts have been in alphabetical order, and that it seemed like I have been building a lexicon of sorts.

You're not wrong.

Indeed, I have been busy building a dictionary of silly, yet somewhat thought provoking, words for the purpose of creating a repository that could serve as a future addendum to the English language.

One can dream...

I love the English language. I love it almost as much as I love my own native language. The thing I love most about it is how flexible the words are and that there's a lot of room to experiment with it. Sure, it's not the most complex language out there, but it's universally spoken enough to be considered ubiquitous.

I was supposed to be a linguist before life took me to a more scientific route. Even though I strayed from that path, the love for languages has always lingered with me. But, I digress.

This long delayed announcement regarding PortmanTuesdays is... you guessed it! A contest!

It has been said that no man can write a book alone. Well, erm... Technically, one person can write a book alone, but wouldn't it be fun to have something a whole community can build together?

Damnit! Pages! No book is made of only one page! Grr! I should've gone with that metaphor instead! Oh well, moving on!

For a whole year, I'm going to be running this PortmanTuesdays contest, so don't rush your entries. This contest is open for all and the rules are simple. Just think of an original portmanteau, supply at least two definitions to support it and post it in the comments section of this post. If you want to make a post about it, feel free to do so, just make sure to tag it with #portmantuesdays then paste a link of it in the comments section down below.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • The word must be original!
  • The comment with your portmanteau or link to you portmanteau should receive the approval (through replies) of at least three other people
  • Final decision would be up to me

Prizes:
1 STEEM per accepted portmanteau
(It's not worth much now, but then again my net worth here isn't worth much either! Now, if this post would payout like a thousand dollars, then the prize would exponentially increase for sure!)
Inclusion of your portmanteau with your credit on a future compilation for PortmanTuesdays

In the past, I've failed as a contest organizer, so I'm not expecting hundreds of entries. But, as my Year of Resilience has taught me, I shouldn't be discouraged by past failures. If you could resteem this to get the word out about the contest, that would be so awesome of you!

Additional notes:

  • Spam comments would receive a 100% flag
  • Keep it as clean as you can
  • Please be supportive of each other!

To get everyone started, here are links to my previous posts from A to Z:

Whew! There you go!

So, just have fun with it! You have a whole year, so don't rush it. Or, do. You have an unlimited number of entries so you can make lots of entries and hope that most of them will stick.

Oh, and uh, one last thing...
3: a day you can celebrate the magnificence of Natalie Portman. Because, why not?

Yawn, you underestimate yourself. Your contest was just fine. For me, yours and the then contest of @playfulfoodie were those that attracted me the most. So, just don't belittle yourself for it. I like this one, too. I'll apply when I find something interesting. Here is my first one (I'll put it on my site as a separate post, as well, and resteem it).

Skyturbation
[skItu(r)'bey-shun]

1: perturbation of air masses
2: event caused by using the high frequency scattered array antennas or lasers to heat a part of the ionosphere by which that part of ionosphere could be heated up to 100 degrees Celsius above its previous temperature, and consequently the cold air masses are sucked underneath the heated air mass. In the 21st century, used in the geoengineering experiments by various countries.

P.S. Eh, I don't know if I wrote my pronouciation correct. I guess noone used it yet, not even me in my Geoengineering series, even though I have already put it down in my unpublished post.

Awesome! Thanks for the entry! I've seen the hashtag skymasturbation before, but never the portmanteau you came up with. Fingers crossed that this would start that trend of people ditching the "mas".

You've always been such an avid participant, and I appreciate your continuing support! Glad to see you back around these parts, my friend!

Cofftea (cawf-tee):

  1. Coffee made so weak it more closely resembles tea

  2. Tea made so strong it more closely resembles coffee

I was going to go with 'earlate' than found it's already in the urban dictionary :0)

What is still missing is the self-serving table.

Haha! Nice one, sis! You know what, I actually made something that I named the exact same thing when I was a child haha! Talk about great minds! Back when I wasn't allowed to drink coffee yet, I mixed Coffee Mate with Nestea to make what I called Cofftea hahaha! It's so awesome that we thought about the same word for two (rather three) different definitions!

Boomsplurt
[boOm(S)'plu-rt]

1: The inevitable conclusion to a squishy mass being propelled through the air with high intensity inertia.
2: The sound of the brain of a reader of @meesterboom's content when they work out the exact disgustingly sexual thing he's described perfectly whimsically.

ยท
ย  ยท ย ์ž‘๋…„

Haha! I hear this every time! So that's what it's called! I'm glad to finally put a name to the sound whew! I'm sure @meesterboom is mighty proud of the cacophony of boomsplurts heard around the globe every after his posts!

Great entry! Thanks for taking the time to write one up, mate!

Where has this word been all my life!? It should most definitely be added to the Oxford dictionary.

If you had to ask, then it most certainly is. You commented on the very last element of the post (which happened to be the only non-original part) and you completely ignored commenting on 98% of the content.

But, because you did vote, I'm giving you a pass. I'm not going to flag you, just don't do it again, especially on other people's posts.
