LIVING VICARIOUSLY

2개월 전

Get a dose of speed.

Long ago in the 90's I was into the new sport of downhill mountainbiking. Back then we started out riding hardtails with three inch travel forks and it was like racing kango hammers. We got punished!

These days I'm a broken old fart who makes creaking noises walking down stairs, so to get a bit of a downhill adrenaline rush I look at go-pro vids on Youtube (one of the few things that Youtube don't censor)

This run by Dan Atherton is fucking madcore - in the top section if he wiped out all those tree stumps would turn him into pet food, and further down in the tree sections he is moving so fast its only after he pulls a move that you can grasp what he just did. Jesus this is full on - the most intense ride I've ever seen!

Now this world championship 2011 run by Danny Hart ( a different fast Dan) isn't go pro but the commentators more than make up for it - they are hilarious - "How does he sit down with balls that big?" and the track is as slippery as it gets. This run has been described as a masterclass in technical wet riding.

I really enjoyed watching this run by Rachael Atherton (sister of Dan) because I can sort of imagine riding it all, and I'm fully into the track. The spectators are a bunch of noisy numpties - cow bells, air horns, deranged screaming, and even chainsaws revving - but it all adds to the excitement.

Now if all that wasn't exciting enough, next watch this vid of Led Zep doing Whole Lotta love, or just take some amphetamines...

This is like lunatic shit.. They must give the ER plenty of business..

·

They certainly do!

Exactly 25 years ago I was a bit of a lunatic myself - check this out - the guy in purple going splat at 3:30 is me (Ian Gregson) - I still feel the effects of that crash more each day...

Holy crap... On a straight-away no less. Maybe lucky it was a straight-away or you would have been launched into space on the curve. Any deaths in this pussy race.

It's different watching it from a helicopter - riding it there is no sense of any danger of going off the edge, if you crash you don't bounce or slide you just instantly stop on the rocks, which is why the injuries can be bad.

I was into natural tracks like that but in a few more years it was all long travel suspension and man made jumps, so that race only lasted a few more years, and thankfully nobody was killed doing it.

After that crash I was literally black with bruising from ankle to shoulder, and my head was very messed up. I saw a few others with similar bruising. These days I just take photos of Mt Fyffe when I'm going past on the ferry.

I sort of miss feeling indestructible, but these days mountains look much bigger and more permanent!

I was watching people do it live in the summer, when we went to Zakopane for my mothers annual holiday (last one ever), they were getting to the top of mountains via skiing chairlifts, holding the bikes sideways. Then riding down.

For a guess I would say they were hitting 50mph.

You could even rent a bike to do it on.

·

So did you have a cow bell or a chainsaw?

LOL - rent a bike to maim yourself on!

Ouch them vids look like pain, much easier doing it with a motorbike with power, weight and more tyre on the dirt. And much better clothing than shorts and socks lol.

The full pro gear is pretty similar to motorcross gear and a big downhill rig has 8" travel and is much more agile than a motorbike - main problem is the light wheels get knocked around much more by tree roots and stuff.

They were amateurs, I only had a camera lol. Nice Suzuki gt 250 from 1977 landed at my yard today and a tzr 125 4fl from some time in the 90's, the latter is a pile of junk, scrapping it, the former worthy of my time.

A classic from 77 like Never Mind the Bollocks!

That's some awesome talent in those vids.
