Bengali Wikipedia is the Bengali edition of Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, directed by the Wikimedia Foundation. This version started the first journey on January 27, 2004. As of 30 August 2018, 60,444 articles have been written in Bangla Wikipedia. The total number of 1,95,376 users has been contributing to the creation of the Encyclopedia by editing 30,93,115 times. 16 Administrators see the administrative affairs of the encyclopedia. There are a total of 4,829 files or documents in the encyclopedia. Bengali Wikipedia has a writing tool in Bangla script, which can be used to type Bangla using phonetic method using any Latin alphabetic keyboard. There is no need to download external software.

Developers started creating language code-based sub-domains for Wikipedia in February 2002, and in that time the sub-domain was created with other languages.  On 1 June 2002, a placeholder page was created automatically in subdomain.  On December 9, 2003, Shah Asaduzzaman, the then Bangladeshi student of the PhD in McGill University of Canada, sent an email to Wikimedia Foundation, Jimmy Wales, requesting the first Bengali Wikipedia. Bengali Wikipedia started officially on 27 January 2004 by creating a main page from an IP address.  The first article written after the launch of Bengali Wikipedia was Bengali which was created on May 24, 2004.
The Bengali Wikipedia started its journey in January 2004. At that time people's attention towards Wikipedia was low. Besides, there were several limitations to contribute in Bengal.
The entire scenario has changed since 2006. At that time, the Bangla blogging world was gradually growing, and many people became accustomed to Bangla computing - free and open source typing tools Avro also played an important role. On 25 March 2006, a Wiki group was formed by the Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) to popularize Wikipedia nationwide. The goal was to introduce Bangla to the world court through Wikipedia and to create a full encyclopedia in Bangla. At that time, there were only 500 articles in the Bengali Wikipedia. But a few more people joined the 'BDSOSN Wiki Team'. The group started spreading Wikipedia's message through some newspapers and started operating a Bangla wiki mailing list. Soon, many Bengali-speaking countries of the country and abroad started joining this dynamic project. As a result, by the end of October, the Bengali Wikipedia touched the milestone of 10 thousand articles. In the South Asian language Wikipedia, the Bengali Wikipedia first reached this milestone.
In the middle of 2009 and 2010, Bengali-speaking Bengalis of India started contributing to the Bengali Wikipedia. At the same time, the Wikimedia Foundation started their journey and in October 2011 the Wikimedia Foundation approved a local section in Bangladesh to promote educational content in Bengal.
