On the 5th of June is marked by United Nation as World Environment Day, the theme for this year is Beat Plastic Pollution.
As a volunteer member of Port Harcourt Recycle team we were not left out on this campaign. We took it down to schools in Port Harcourt for more awareness, by getting the young ones involved because a trained child is better than a repaired adult.
Plastic is material consisting of any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic compounds that are malleable and so can be molded into solid objects.
Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, or humans. Plastics that act as pollutants are categorized into micro, meso, or macro debris, based on size. Due to the durability of plastic it makes it hard for biodegredation by nature so therefore accumulation of such will lead to pollution. But if you cant reuse ,then refuse it.
Here in Port Harcourt city, it is really a menace because accumulation of these plastic tend to block the water ways and cause flooding during rainy days, but this is caused due to the ignorance and reluctance to act of the citizens and the government respectively. Some of the plastic are dumped also into the rivers and foward flows to the oceans, and the little piece of plastic that break into tiny piece are consumed by fishes and humans consumes them.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AS AN INDIVIDUAL
°PICK UP ANY PLASTIC YOU SEE AROUND YOU AND DUMP PROPERLY : This might sound silly but the truth is the earth is what we have left if we dont take care of it who will.
Start with your house first, in your kitchen , your office etc. Lets be the change we want to see.
°ENCOURAGE THE USE OF NON PLASTIC PACKAGING : Even in restaurants encourage the use of non plastic packaging like paper packaging and the like.
°REFUSE PLASTIC CUTLERY AND STRAW: Due to the chemical process used in manufacturing plastics it is not advicable to encourage the continous use of such of cancer related issues.
°SUPPORT THE BAN OF SINGLE USE PLASTIC BAG IN YOUR COUNTRY
