The insecurity of money: And because of your wealth your heart has grown proud, Ezekiel 28:5

2개월 전

Ezekiel in the old testament is an oracle and a prophet of the Lord. The Old Testament frequently mentions him as the "son of man", as the personification of the perfections of God, in other words, Ezekiel is the manifestation of the mercy (compassion, kindness), the wisdom, and the righteousness of the Lord.
Ezekiel prophesied the fall of Jerusalem in front of the King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar. The prophet shows us how the King of Babylon is an instrument of punishment of the divine providence and so Ezekiel also prophesies against the pagan nations that were also responsible for the fall of Jerusalem.
The Phoenicians, with the leadership of the city of Tyre, had grown enormously rich from maritime, trade and thought that their riches made them impossible to be conquered by the King Nebuchadnezzar, but Ezekiel in his oracle against Tyre, showed to them the insecurity that comes from the riches.
Those who trust exclusively in their power and their money are destined sooner or later to fall, because someone better armed or better prepared can always arrive, this is what Ezekiel explained to us. And this is the mistake made by the Phoenicians, the Egyptians and also by the king of Judah. There is a very interesting phrase by Aristotle on the subject about the apparent goods: "Through the search for false goods, a true evil will come sooner or later."
Thus the prophet Ezekiel begins his oracle against the prince of Tyre, who because of his arrogance and idolatry had put all his trust in the false goods:
"In the pride of your heart
you say, ´I am a god;
I sit on the throne of a god
in the heart of the seas.´
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
though you think you are as wise as a god.
Are you wiser than Daniel?
Is no secret hidden from you?
By your wisdom and understanding
you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
in your treasuries.
By your great skill in trading
you have increased your wealth,
and because of your wealth
your heart has grown proud" Ezekiel 28:2-5.
